Задание 1 из 4
At thirty-two, Lena thought she had finished with competitive rowing. Her shoulders hurt after long sessions, and the early starts had begun to feel like a tax on the rest of her life. She sold her racing shell and took a job coaching beginners on a quiet city canal. On Sundays, she allowed herself to sleep until the extravagant hour of eight. Then a former teammate called about a coastal race for pairs. The course was difficult, but the event would be held only once to mark the harbour's anniversary. Lena laughed at the invitation and said no. That evening, though, she found herself checking wind charts and calculating how many weeks remained before the race. For several days, she was on the fence. Returning to serious training meant pain, expense and mornings in the dark. Refusing meant watching someone else take the second seat beside a friend she trusted completely. She made lists, crossed them out and found that neither side of the page settled anything. The decision came during a beginner's lesson. A nervous student caught the water badly, recovered and began laughing at her own mistake. Lena remembered that rowing had never promised comfort; what she missed was the fierce attention it demanded. She called her former teammate before she could invent another sensible objection. They finished the coastal race in fifth place, soaked and exhausted, and Lena considered it one of her best results.
In paragraph 3, what does the expression ‘was on the fence’ mean? 1) She watched the race from a raised position. 2) She was uncertain which choice to make. 3) She tried to remain outside the disagreement. 4) She had already decided to leave the team.

Задание 2 из 4
A research vessel can look enormous from the quay and remarkably small after three days in open water. Our ship carried twelve scientists, six crew members and a laboratory squeezed between the engine room and the galley. We had come to study microscopic plastic fragments carried by currents in the North Atlantic. The work sounded clean and modern until the first net returned full of weed, fish scales and grey foam. Each sample took hours to process. We rinsed it, filtered it and examined the remaining particles under a microscope. Fibres from our own clothes could ruin the count, so we wore plain cotton coats and kept covered dishes beside every instrument. Even then, doubt accompanied every bright speck. During the first week, we collected forty litres of surface water. Against the size of the Atlantic, that volume was a drop in the ocean. It could not tell us how much plastic existed everywhere, and nobody on board pretended otherwise. Its value lay in being gathered repeatedly along a carefully recorded route. When combined with samples from earlier voyages, our narrow line of observations began to show a pattern. Concentrations rose near a slow-turning current and fell sharply beyond it. The finding did not solve the wider problem, but it helped researchers decide where a larger survey should begin. Science often advances like that: not through one heroic bucket of seawater, but through small measurements whose limits are honestly stated.
In paragraph 3, which option is closest in meaning to the expression ‘a drop in the ocean’? 1) An amount far too small to have much effect. 2) A discovery that could transform marine research. 3) A sample that had been damaged by seawater. 4) A minor task that was easy to complete.

Задание 3 из 4
On the bank we found the remains of a trout, several silver scales and a strip of dark skin. I guessed that an otter had eaten there. Lena crouched without answering and pointed to two narrow holes in the sand. She **read the signs** differently. The holes had been made by a bird's beak, she said, while faint lines beside them showed where wing feathers had touched the ground. A young osprey had probably dropped the fish and struggled to lift it again. The missing flesh did not prove that the bird had eaten on the bank. We walked upstream and soon saw another piece of evidence: a broken branch above a deep pool. One pale feather clung to it. Lena did not celebrate her success. She placed the feather under the branch and moved on, as if the forest had merely answered a routine question. That evening an osprey circled over our camp with a fish in its claws. I watched it disappear behind the trees. The bank no longer looked empty to me; it seemed crowded with unfinished stories, most of which I still lacked the patience to notice.
Прочитайте текст. Какой вариант ближе всего по значению к выделенному выражению **read the signs** во втором абзаце? 1) read warning notices on the trees 2) followed marked directions to the river 3) examined letters carved into the bark 4) understood what the traces indicated

Задание 4 из 4
My uncle sent me to spend October with Sergei, a trapper who lived alone near the upper river. Sergei met me at the bus stop, took one of my bags and asked no questions during the six-mile walk to his cabin. He taught me what I needed to know with the fewest possible words. A raised hand meant stop. Two taps on a tree meant circle downwind. When I confused fox tracks with those of a small dog, he erased both sets with his mitten and told me to look again. At supper he listened to the radio and answered my attempts at conversation with a nod. I learned nothing about his family, though a child's blue cup stood on the highest shelf. I did not ask about it. For most of that month, Sergei **kept me at arm's length**. He was never unkind, yet he allowed no easy confidence between us. Only on my last morning did he hand me his field notebook. Inside were careful drawings of tracks, weather records and, on the final page, my name above a sketch of the route home. “So you won't get lost next year,” he said.
Прочитайте текст. Какой вариант ближе всего по значению к выделенному выражению **kept me at arm's length** в четвёртом абзаце? 1) protected me from dangerous animals 2) made me walk a short distance behind him 3) avoided becoming friendly with me 4) measured the distance between us
