Задание 1 из 3
By eleven, the bakery had become a place of echoes. The ovens were cooling, metal trays clicked as they contracted, and the last two packers spoke in whispers although there was nobody asleep nearby. I loaded the van in the order printed on my route sheet and put a small blue notebook on the passenger seat. The company supplied tablets, of course. They showed addresses, quantities and delivery times, and on ordinary nights they worked perfectly well. Fog made an ordinary night rare along the coast. It gathered in hollows, blurred road signs and sometimes blocked the mobile signal for several miles. On my first foggy run, the tablet froze just after I had passed the lighthouse turn. I remembered the next village but not which of its two hotels had ordered the rye loaves. By the time the screen returned, I had driven six miles in the wrong direction. After that, before leaving the bakery, I copied only the next three stops into the notebook. Writing out the entire route would have wasted time, and the details often changed during the night. Three stops were enough: if the signal disappeared, I could keep moving until it returned. The notebook also survived cold fingers better than a glass screen. On clear nights I rarely opened it. In thick fog, however, that modest scrap of preparation saved fuel, temper and, once, a breakfast service. I never claimed it was a better system than the tablet. It was simply a sensible reserve when the weather made the better system unreliable.
According to the author, keeping a separate notebook during night deliveries was … Choose one option. 1) an unnecessary habit that slowed the work down 2) a useful precaution under certain weather conditions 3) a company rule that every driver had to follow 4) a way of recording complaints about customers

Задание 2 из 3
The competition took place in a converted railway shed, and in January the building never quite lost the cold. We arrived before sunrise. While the route setters checked the walls, I sat on my rope bag and watched my breath cloud above my hands. My climbing shoes had spent the night in the boot of the car. When I tried to bend one, the rubber felt as stiff as the plastic sole of a ski boot. Mara tucked her own shoes inside her jacket for ten minutes. I laughed, but she told me not to confuse warmth with softness. Rubber grips polished holds best within a moderate temperature range; when it is very cold, the sole does not mould itself to the surface so readily. She was not proposing that we heat the shoes on a radiator. Too much heat can weaken the glue, and warm shoes soon cool again in an unheated hall. I followed her example and kept mine beneath my fleece while we studied the first route. The change was small but noticeable. The shoes flexed normally, and I could feel the rounded starting hold instead of standing on it as though on a coin. By the second round, the hall was warmer and the trick made no difference, so I stopped doing it. Since then I have used the same method only when my shoes have been stored somewhere genuinely cold. Under those circumstances it is effective, quick and less dramatic than it looks. Treating it as a universal performance secret would be foolish.
According to the author, warming the climbing shoes before putting them on was … Choose one option. 1) a harmless ritual with no practical effect 2) a risky trick suitable only for professional athletes 3) an effective measure when the shoes had been left in the cold 4) a method recommended by the shoe manufacturer

Задание 3 из 3
The scanner stopped halfway through the afternoon list. Its table still moved, but the ring above it made a thin, repeating whistle that did not belong to any normal sequence. I was called from the workshop and found three patients waiting in gowns, each pretending not to listen to the sound. The radiographer had already explained that nobody was in danger. That explanation was necessary, yet the closed door and my case of tools made the interruption look more serious than it was. The fault lay in a cooling fan behind a removable panel. Replacing it required patience rather than silence, so I kept the door open and described the ordinary parts of the job as I worked. I said that the scanner contained several fans, much like a computer, and that this one had begun to complain before it failed completely. One patient asked whether the machine could lose her images. I told her that the images were stored elsewhere and that the present fault had occurred before her scan began. I did not offer medical advice, and I left all questions about the examination to the radiographer. Nor did I turn the repair into a performance; whenever I needed to concentrate, I stopped talking. Still, the conversation changed the room. The patients no longer had to invent explanations for every metallic click, and I lost no time because my hands continued working. When the new fan began to turn quietly, the oldest patient applauded once. Talking had not repaired the scanner. It had made the wait proportionate to the problem, which was useful in its own right.
According to the author, speaking to patients while repairing the scanner was … Choose one option. 1) a helpful way to reduce anxiety without delaying the repair 2) a breach of hospital rules that the engineer later regretted 3) a substitute for explaining the procedure to patients 4) an attempt to collect technical information from patients
