Задание 1 из 10

Pavel said the ending was the only honest part of the book. They were speaking quietly at first, B __________. Then Pavel laughed, and the sound carried across the reading room. A student at the next table looked up, C __________. Lena opened the novel and pointed to a paragraph in the afterword. She claimed it proved that the author had planned a different conclusion. Pavel read the passage twice, D __________. He argued that an author's abandoned plan could not cancel the book that readers actually had. The librarian finally came over, not to silence them but to ask whether they wanted the earlier translation as well. The introduction in that translation meant little E __________. The three of them compared the versions at a small table by the stairs. What had sounded like a quarrel slowly became a problem of translation: one repeated image had disappeared from the newer edition. By closing time, Lena and Pavel had exchanged notes and reserved two more books F __________. Neither admitted defeat. Still, they left through the same door, continuing the argument in the rain.

Задание 6 из 10
Once a month, the acquisitions committee met in a narrow room A __________. Every new book meant that another might eventually have to leave. At this meeting, the first disputed title was an expensive study of disappearing languages, B __________. One member argued that the price could not be justified. Another replied that the library's job was not simply to reward popularity. The head librarian supported buying the study C __________. A single reader might use it to begin years of research. Yet she did not dismiss the figures completely: several costly reference works had never been opened at all. The committee agreed to buy one digital licence rather than two printed copies. The harder argument concerned an old political essay D __________. Its pages were brittle, its claims offended several members, and no one had borrowed it recently. Salma, the youngest librarian, argued for keeping it E __________. Removing only comfortable books would turn selection into silent approval. She proposed moving the essay to the closed store and adding a modern critical introduction beside it. The vote passed by one. The head librarian then returned to a proposal: a general rule for removing any book untouched for five years. They discussed it F __________. After the evening's arguments, the rule suddenly seemed too simple. The committee postponed it again and left the room one by one.

Задание 8 из 10
For three weeks, a small studio behind the library's music room became a recording booth. The library was preparing an audio edition of a local memoir. On the first morning, the narrator stopped halfway through page two A __________. A place called March had been read as an instruction to march. Everyone laughed, then recorded the paragraph again. The work demanded more than a clear voice. The editor marked changes of scene B __________. She also checked every date against the printed book. Some phrases looked natural on paper but became confusing when heard. One long sentence was divided by a breath, C __________. The pause made two speakers easier to distinguish. Twice a week, Daniel visited the studio with the braille edition, D __________. He noticed a missing footnote and a chapter title that differed from the print copy. The production team corrected both. They also abandoned an abbreviation E __________. Spoken aloud, it could mean two different organisations. The complete recording lasted nine hours. It was sent to the library server only F __________. Daniel listened to the opening chapter through the public catalogue. This time March sounded like a place, the footnote was present, and every chapter marker worked. He borrowed the book before anyone announced that it was ready.

Задание 9 из 10
At seven thirty, before the public doors opened, Mara carried a stack of returned books into the sorting room. Rain tapped against the high windows, and the old radiators answered with irregular knocks. On top of the stack lay a thick volume on Arctic journeys, A __________. The comments were not the usual complaints about dates or difficult vocabulary. They were questions, written in a neat, narrow hand, B __________. Mara checked the borrowing record. The book had belonged to an elderly reader named Mr Cole, C __________. That surprised her: he generally brought his books to the desk and stayed for a conversation. She turned another page and noticed that two thin sheets had been folded into the binding. At first she assumed that they were part of the book, D __________. One was a list of ships; the other was a careful map drawn from memory. She took the volume upstairs to the conservation room, E __________. Her colleague examined the binding and confirmed that the papers had probably been there for decades. Removing them would not damage the book, but separating the map from its context might destroy the meaning of the reader's notes. Mara therefore photographed every page before placing the loose sheets in a protective folder. She then wrote to Mr Cole, asking whether he knew who had made the annotations. His answer arrived that afternoon: the handwriting was his father's. The final question in the margin ended without a full stop, F __________.

Задание 10 из 10
When Arun entered the research library at dawn, only the emergency lights were on. The ventilation system had stopped with the power, A __________. He went first to the duty log, B __________. A short note reported a fault at 3:17 a.m.; below it, someone had added, ‘No data lost.’ At the issue desk, Arun found one computer still running on its battery, C __________. The machine could display old information but could not send new requests to the underground store. In less than an hour, twenty historians would arrive expecting boxes of documents. Arun considered closing the reading room. Instead, he unlocked a cabinet of paper request forms, D __________. The first readers were surprised to be given pencils and numbered cards. Some had never ordered a document without a screen. Runners carried the slips downstairs, and the boxes began to arrive at almost the usual speed. The only serious problem concerned digital scans, E __________. Arun offered printed indexes instead and promised to send the images later. Power returned shortly after noon. Every paper order was entered into the system F __________. The procedure was slow, yet the handwritten record revealed one useful fact: two requests that the software had marked as duplicates were actually for different editions. Arun kept the paper forms. Emergencies, he decided, sometimes exposed errors that convenience had hidden.
