Пример с решением и ответом
When I first entered Pavel's workshop, I expected noise. Instead, the furnace breathed steadily in the corner, and everyone spoke in short sentences, as if long ones might cool the glass. Pavel handed me a steel pipe and told me to keep turning it. I asked when he would teach me to blow a vase. He laughed. “First learn not to make a pear,” he said.

For three weeks I gathered small lumps of molten glass and rolled them on a flat iron table. Mine leaned, wrinkled or slipped to the floor, where they hardened into useless green tears. Pavel rarely corrected my hands directly. He would place one of his own pieces beside mine and ask where the light became uneven. This seemed needlessly indirect. I wanted rules; he kept giving me things to notice.

One afternoon an experienced assistant made a perfect blue bowl, then dropped it while carrying it to the cooling oven. Nobody cried out. Pavel swept the fragments aside and told us to prepare another batch. Only then did I understand why the shelves displayed so few finished objects despite months of work. The craft did not reward attachment to a single attempt.

Much later, my first saleable cup emerged from the oven. Its rim was slightly heavy, but it stood straight. Pavel turned it toward the window and nodded once. I had imagined feeling triumphant. What I felt instead was curiosity about the next cup: where its light might fail, and whether I would notice soon enough.
Read the text and choose the correct statement that follows from it.
  1. Pavel believed that careful observation was an essential part of learning the craft.
  2. Pavel avoided giving instructions because he wanted apprentices to work without supervision.
  3. A glass object had to be flawless before it could be offered for sale.
  4. The workshop produced few objects because customers rarely bought handmade glass.
1) Pavel believed that careful observation was an essential part of learning the craft.

  1. Задание 1 из 4

Moss arrived on a wet Tuesday, carrying with him the smell of the railway yard and a piece of blue rope tied round his neck. My father said at once that the dog could stay only until Saturday. He made this announcement while drying Moss with his own oldest towel. The first two nights Moss slept under the kitchen table. Whenever a chair scraped, he woke and stood perfectly still, as if waiting for an order he might fail to understand. I tried calling him, but he watched my hands rather than my face. Father told me not to crowd him. “A frightened dog needs room to make one decision of his own,” he said, then claimed he had merely read that somewhere. By Friday, Moss had discovered the warm patch beside the boiler. Father moved his boots so the dog could stretch out there, though he complained about finding hair on the laces. On Saturday morning a man telephoned in answer to our notice. He had a large garden, he said, and wanted a dog to guard it. Father asked whether the garden had a secure fence, whether someone was home during the day, and whether the man intended to keep the dog outside in winter. The conversation ended quickly. No one mentioned the deadline again. A week later, Father came home with a proper collar. “The rope was unsafe,” he said. Moss lifted his head at the sound of his voice, but did not yet come forward. Father sat on the floor anyway, leaving a careful distance between them.

Read the text. It can be inferred from the text that the narrator's father ... Choose one of the four options. 1) regretted allowing Moss into the house 2) understood the dog's needs better than he admitted 3) wanted Moss to become a working sheepdog 4) believed that dogs should never be trained Write one digit: the number of the correct option.

  2. Задание 2 из 4

The university library changed character after midnight. In daylight it belonged to timetables: seminars ended, chairs filled, printers complained. At night the building seemed to breathe more slowly. I worked the desk from eleven until six, a shift my friends imagined as seven paid hours of reading. I rarely opened my own book. At twelve fifteen, nursing students arrived from the hospital, still carrying the smell of antiseptic on their coats. At one, a delivery driver used the public computer to complete an application for a better route. A young father came in at two because his flat was too small for both a sleeping baby and an online examination. None of them stayed long. All needed the same unlikely combination: light, warmth, silence and permission to remain. There were disturbances. The automatic doors sometimes opened for windblown leaves. A printer jammed whenever the weather turned cold. Once a student fell asleep over a dictionary and woke convinced that her bag had been stolen; it was under her chair. Such incidents kept me moving. Near dawn, the cleaners started on the upper floor, and the lift carried down the clean mineral smell of wet tiles. The night readers packed their cables and cups. By eight, daytime staff would count visits, loans and database searches. Those figures mattered, but they could not show why a warm desk at three in the morning might allow somebody to keep a job, finish a course or simply think without waking a child. On my walk home, the windows went dark behind me. The library was closing for one hour, no longer than a held breath.

Read the text. What does the author imply about working in the night library? Choose one answer. 1. It is less demanding because almost no one visits after midnight. 2. It is valuable chiefly because staff can read without interruption. 3. It reveals uses of the library that are easy to overlook during ordinary hours. 4. It should be limited to readers doing academic research.

  3. Задание 3 из 4

At four thirty in the morning, a reed bed appears almost empty. The darkness hides movement, and the loudest sound may be water slipping from a bank. Then one bird calls, another answers, and within twenty minutes the marsh has acquired several invisible neighbourhoods. This is when field teams begin the annual count. The word “count” can be misleading. No observer expects to record every bird. Some remain silent, several calls overlap, and a single restless male may be heard from two positions. The team therefore follows a fixed route, stops at the same marked points, and listens for the same number of minutes each year. Weather matters too: strong wind carries sounds away, while heavy rain can silence birds altogether. A doubtful morning is recorded as doubtful rather than polished into certainty. What results is an estimate, not a census. Yet estimates collected consistently can answer questions that a brilliant isolated observation cannot. If calls associated with one species become less frequent along the route for five consecutive springs, researchers can examine water levels, reed cutting, or changes in nearby farmland. If numbers recover after a channel is reopened, that pattern also deserves attention. Visitors sometimes ask why the team does not use microphones and let software identify everything. Recorders are useful, but machines also confuse wind, frogs, and distant engines with particular calls. For now, trained ears and recordings work best together. The aim is not to create a flawless list for one morning. It is to notice when the marsh begins telling a different story.

Read the text. It can be inferred from the text that the researcher values the dawn count mainly because it ... Choose one of the four options. 1) produces an exact total of every bird in the marsh 2) replaces the need for observations in other seasons 3) makes rare species easy to photograph 4) reveals changes when the same method is repeated over time Write one digit: the number of the correct option.

  4. Задание 4 из 4

Arun returned the novel after forty pages. He placed it on the desk with the firmness of someone completing an unpleasant duty. ‘Nothing happens,’ he told Sara. The cover promised a journey, but the main character had spent three chapters packing a suitcase and remembering meals. Sara, who ran the lunchtime book table at the engineering office, did not defend the novel. She asked which meal he remembered. Arun frowned. There had been soup in a chipped bowl, perhaps, and an orange divided into five pieces. Sara asked why five. He did not know. That evening, irritation sent him back to the book. The orange appeared during a winter of shortages. Four family members sat at the table, but the absent brother's share was placed on a plate. Nothing in the paragraph stated where the brother had gone. Later, the suitcase contained his gloves. Arun began again from page one. At the next lunch, he accused Sara of setting a trap. She said she had merely asked about an orange. They argued over whether the journey had begun before the character left the house. Arun maintained that a journey required movement. Sara pointed to the suitcase, packed and unpacked three times. He eventually finished the novel. He still found parts of it slow, and he disliked the final chapter. Yet when a colleague complained that nothing happened in the opening, Arun asked, with borrowed calm, which meal she remembered. Sara heard him and laughed. He had not become an admirer of quiet novels in general. He had only learned that quietness could contain events he had expected to arrive wearing louder clothes.

Read the text. What does the text imply about Arun's initial opinion of the novel? Choose one answer. 1. It was based more on expectations about genre than on careful attention to the book itself. 2. It was correct because the novel's plot contained no unexpected events. 3. It changed only because Sara revealed how the story ended. 4. It reflected his general dislike of discussing books with other people.
